Extremadura, in addition to being a natural paradise, has a great cultural heritage and has a large number of museums that have a lot to offer history and art lovers. In fact, in Extremadura you can find more than thirty museums full of works of art and pieces of history, today from our travel blog we recommend some of the most remarkable.

The best museums in Extremadura

While it is difficult to stay with a few, these are the ones that in our opinion are must-see places:

    • The National Museum of Roman Art of Mérida, by Rafael Moneo, has a large number of pieces of great historical value. It has one of the best collections of Roman mosaics and sculptures in all of Spain. The museum building itself is worth a visit, it has very sober lines, reminiscent of some of the great constructions of the Roman era, and in its crypt you will be able to see a fragment of the road and some of the ruins that were found during its construction.

In addition, Mérida is a World Heritage Site and it can all be considered a museum. You will be able to see the Theater and the Amphitheater, and the Casa del Mitreo, the Roman bridge, the Temple of Diana … Without a doubt, the whole city is full of Roman remains that are worth seeing.

    • In Badajoz you can see the MEIAC (Extremadura and Ibero-American Museum of Contemporary Art), something totally different. The building is by José Antonio Galea, and it opened in 1996. It stands out not only for the works of art it houses, but also for its own structure, and that it is not only a museum in which works are exhibited, but also organizes workshops, temporary exhibitions and activities that keep you alive.
    • Near Cáceres you will find the Vostell de Malpartida museum, a striking complex located in former installations of transhumant shepherds: dryers, woolen washhouses … the Wolf and Mercedes Vostell collection, a selection of conceptual arate or a donation from Gino di Maggio are found in large livestock buildings. Of course, an unusual museum, with very striking works.
    • The Museums of the Royal Monastery of Guadalupe take us back in time. The whole monastery is itself a museum, and it was not for nothing that it was declared a World Heritage Site. Inside the monastery you can see several museums: the embroidery museum, the sculpture museum … But you should not miss the Mudejar cloister and its canvases, among which we can find works by Goya and Zurbarán among other great masters of painting.

A visit to Extremadura is always worthwhile, whether for its impressive natural or artistic heritage. This list of museums that we offer are just a small sample of what we can find. That others Extremadura museums would you add to the list? Share them with us in the comments
